Jeffery A. Bishop dies 'from wounds suffered while conducting combat operations'

DICKSON — A Dickson Marine who had married his hometown sweetheart six months ago was killed in Iraq on Friday, family said.

Lance Cpl. Jeffrey Adam Bishop, 23, was shot in Fallujah when his barracks was attacked, his family said.

Bishop, a sniper, was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Lejeune, N.C.

"We don't know anything yet," Bishop's father-in-law, Don Peery of Dickson, said Monday. "We'll know more tomorrow."

Fallujah is a city in the Iraqi province of Anbar, roughly 43 miles west of Baghdad on the Euphrates River.

Bishop was a 2002 graduate of Dickson County High School; in November 2006 he married Emma Katherine Peery of Dickson.

"She's very distraught," Don Peery said of his daughter. "We don't even have the body yet."

Steve Baggett, minister at the Walnut Street Church of Christ where Adam and Emma Bishop were married and her family attends services, saw it as a sad but patriotic death.

"I'm so thankful for young men and women like Adam who are willing to fight for the freedom, which we so much enjoy, and even give their lives for that freedom," Baggett said.

George Caudill, former Dickson County schools superintendent, performed the wedding ceremony.

"When this beautiful young couple, obviously very much in love, were married six months ago … we thought they would enjoy many years of happiness and positive accomplishments together," Caudill said.

"But we never know what lies around the corner."
